To begin this project, I started by choosing a song based on the way it sounded, rather than its lyrics. Palace by BROCKHAMPTON has a steady beat, which inspired me to design a poster that gave the feeling of climbing. Because of this, the name of my poster is Rise. After listening to my chosen song several times, I started to sketch thumbnails as I listened. I listened to the rhythm of the song and let it guide my pencil.
Creating a preliminary design that satisfied me was the most difficult part of this project. After doing several sketches, I finally had one that stood out to me and I began to develop it. I wanted to have some perspective in my piece, so I decided to have small, lighter section as the center of my poster and as the color moves towards the edges it gets progressively darker. In the final poster, I added a luminous effect to the center to make it appear as if I was glowing.
Along with the repetitive beat, the song also has a smooth, flowing rhythm. In order to represent this in my poster, I added flowing lines that travel throughout the poster, decreasing in size as they move towards the center. At first these lines were sporadic, but I decided that to better fit with the mood of the song, they should be more orderly. This also adds to the feeling of pulling towards the center in my poster and rising up.
In the beginning of my design process, I decided that I wanted my primary color to be blue. Palace has a soothing beat that made me decide on a cool color to be the background. However, the song builds up as it goes on, eventually ending much louder that it began, so I included shades of yellow and orange to bring out that feeling. I also employed the use of overlays to make the colors of my poster more vibrant. The song may be slow, but it isn’t sad, so if I had only used blue in the poster it wouldn’t have been representative of the mood of the song.
As for my finished product, I am especially pleased with the color scheme. I think that it represents my song well, with both the soothing blues and vibrant oranges. I would have liked to push the perspective of my piece a bit more, but I think that it still is the feeling of looking up at the center of my piece, which was an idea I wanted to portray since the beginning of my process.

Rise – Final Project Poster Design

The song I chose to illustrate in my poster is Palace by BROCKHAMPTON. Picking a song was one of the harder parts of this project, and I finally decided on Palace because of its rhythm. I chose my original song based on lyrics, but realized that I should choose a song for the way it sounds, rather than the lyrical content. Palace made me think of climbing a tall staircase so I wanted to portray a faraway point that feels as if the viewer is heading towards it. I thought of stairs because of the steady beat of the music, but the song also has a flowing rhythm to it as well. This is why I incorporated the flowing lines in my poster. I am most happy with my color scheme of my poster, because the cool blues represent the soothing rhythm and the bright oranges represent the faster beat.

Color Theories Critique
No changes were made to my work after the critique because my partner wrote that I was able to achieve harmony with each of my designs.

I started this project off with a photograph I had taken and used that to begin my lineart. The lineart was actually quite difficult, since I had some trouble navigating Illustrator. The second hardest part was choosing the actual colors, but using a tool in Illustrator helped me to pick the proper colors.
Irregular Grid

For the irregular grid project I used PITT pens and used the different techniques we used in class, such as hatching and stippling, in order to shade each section. The hardest part was creating the design, because it needed to have visual interest without being too complex.
